This Week

Feb. 18-21

Finally, a nice week of weather! I think the kids forgot what outside recess was! We are all very excited to be able to go outside and run off some energy during recess time.

This Week:
Reading- We are working on the letter O- Remembering that the letter O is a vowel and has two sounds, long and short. We are finding things that begin with o, searching for the letter O in stories and working on writing the letter O. During reading centers we are continuing to work on letters learned so far. Some groups are also working on letter sounds and sight words. We are also starting to tell stories that go with certain pictures. I show the student a picture of a jumprope for example, the student then tells me any story that makes sense about a jumprope. Some of the other reading centers this week include using stamps to copy names of students in the class, matching pictures that have the same beginning sound (Shark and Shell), Stringing letter beads onto laces to make works (This is great for improving fine motor skills and working those writing muscles).

Math- In math this week we are talking about equal groups. We practice putting objects into equal groups. We will also learn that odd numbers cannot be split into equal groups, unless they are cookies, then we can break on in half. :) We are also continuing to work on recognizing numbers 1-10 and counting to 30. Keep practicing this with your child at home too! We will be working on a counting book this week that centers around the Olympics. We are excited to learn about some of the Olympic sports while we learn about counting and numbers.

Keep reinforcing skills at home- It really does show in school when parents are working with their children at home as well. I am seeing students make a lot of progress this year. I have a great set of parents to work with. Thanks for all you do for your child!
